Ghislaine Maxwell, the old affiliate of convicted intercourse culprit Jeffrey Epstein, refused to answer to questions from the US Congress, invoking her lawful simply against self-incrimination.
The British socialite, who is serving a 20-yr jail sentence for intercourse trafficking, used to be subpoenaed to testify through video hyperlink before the US Home Oversight Committee on Monday from her jail cell.
Republican committee chairman James Comer stated Maxwell invoked the Fifth Modification of the US Structure, which allows other folks to refuse to answer to questions that can incriminate them.
“As anticipated, Ghislaine Maxwell took the Fifth and refused to answer to any questions,” Comer told reporters. “This is obviously very disappointing.”

According to Comer, Maxwell’s lawyers told the committee that she would only agree to testify if she was first granted clemency by US President Donald Trump. The committee rejected that request.
Her legal team had earlier urged Congress to grant her immunity so she could testify without fear of further prosecution, but the request was rejected.
Maxwell, now 64, was convicted in 2021 of helping Epstein recruit, groom and traffic underage girls for sexual abuse. Epstein, a wealthy financier with ties to powerful figures across politics, business and entertainment, died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide.
Maxwell is the only person to have been convicted in connection with Epstein’s crimes.
Her deposition comes amid the release of millions of documents by the US Justice Department linked to the Epstein investigation. While officials have said no new prosecutions are expected, the files have renewed scrutiny of prominent figures named in connection with Epstein.
The House Oversight Committee has also summoned former president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton to testify about their interactions with Epstein. Both have asked for their depositions to be held publicly to prevent political misuse.
