Rahman, 60, led the BNP to a landslide victory in the February 12 general elections. The party secured 209 of the 297 contested seats in the 13th parliamentary elections. The BNP coalition won 212 seats overall, while the Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats. The Awami League of former premier Sheikh Hasina was barred from contesting the polls.
The vote was the first since the massive 2024 uprising that toppled Hasina’s government. An interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus had been in charge for the past 18 months in the country of 170 million people.
Rahman’s victory marks a remarkable turnaround. He returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years in exile in Britain. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and assassinated President Ziaur Rahman, and becomes Bangladesh’s first male prime minister in 35 years.
