He noted that fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, dairy and herbs has a very short shelf life and cannot be stored for long periods.

“These products have days of shelf life, not weeks or months. They cannot be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope because the Cape of Good Hope adds four to six weeks to a transit and a strawberry does not survive four to six weeks in a container. When the routes close, the perishable category depletes in real time with no backstop,” Perera effectively-known.
