Seven fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy off Kodiyakkarai

Seven fishermen from Mayiladuthurai district in Tamil Nadu had been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) night for allegedly crossing the Worldwide Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) while fishing in the Palk Strait.

Sources in the Fisheries Department acknowledged the fishermen had ventured into the ocean from Kodiyakkarai off Vedaranyam in two fibre boats at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The boats had been intercepted at around 10 p.m. discontinuance to Neduntheevu.

One amongst the boats had four fishermen on board — Devaraj and Sridhar from Perumalpettai, and Kalaivanan and Saranraj from Pudhukuppam discontinuance to Sirkazhi.

The 2d fibre boat had three fishermen — Rajesh, Sathya, and Thanivel — all residents of Vanagiri.

The fishermen, in conjunction with their boats, had been taken into custod for allegedly fishing staunch during the maritime boundary. Though hailing from Mayiladuthurai district, the fishermen had been staying at Kodiyakkarai for fishing activities.
