“What came about this day in Teotihuacan hurts us deeply,” she said, offering solidarity to the victims and their families.

While Mexico continues to grapple with drug cartel-related violence, such indiscriminate shootings at major tourist sites remain rare, especially compared to the United States.

The over 2,000-year-old Teotihuacan complex is among Mexico’s most significant archaeological sites and a major draw for international visitors, with over 1.8 million tourists recorded in 2025. The incident comes as Mexico City prepares for a surge in global visitors ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, with an estimated 5.5 million visitors expected.
